Some rare time off allowed me the opportunity to do a bit of shopping, something I haven't done properly in quite a while. I anticipated yet another unsuccessful outing, but I was pleasantly surprised. I picked up this beautiful angora (blend?) jumper. It is the most perfect jumper ever. The neckline is beautiful, but what I like most is that it doesn't have that thick band around the bottom that most jumpers do. I find this really unflattering. I also bought APC loafers but I have decided to exchange them for some blue suede Repettos.

Buying another class items makes me realize I am finally making progress on that elusive search for the perfect wardrobe. I also have come to the conclusion that I am nearly done when it comes to shoes. Just some nice sandals and winter boots and I am finished...in theory anyway.

Somewhat luckily given I've just bought a jumper, the weather isn't great and a lightweight coat/jacket is still needed. I've seen this one (Maje) that I like. They did an amazing wool coat in a similar style last winter that I loved, so I am tempted by this one. It also comes in navy. Thoughts?

I am done studying (finally!) and I work for a travel company.

Well firstly, I hope this never happens! Difficult, but I think my Isabel Marant boots...I think. But hypothetically, I would save my Isabel Marant jacket, boots and my Chanel flats.

It would have to be my Isabel Marant jacket, my boots and my Chanel flats.

The List: Recap

Back at the beginning of the year I resolved to only buy 10 things in 2011. Even by my meagre buying standards I assumed this would be a challenge. Turns out its not at all! I made THIS list and I have been faithful to it. In 4 months I have ticked 2 items off, but given the nature of the items this is not at all bad going.

First I bought the boucle jacket. Ignore this dreadful picture, I swear one day I will take one with me wearing it. The material is light but with form, the shoulder pads provide structure without being horribly retro and the sleeves are that perfect -just hitting the wrist bone- length.

And most recently (in fact so recent I haven't even worn them yet...) the holy grail of ballet flats. I have dreamed of these shoes for years and they are finally mine! I feel now I have pretty much all the shoes I have ever lusted over so I really need to lay focus on clothes!

While it feels great to have made such major progress there are a couple of problems. I have two amazing, life long items. But I still don't need things like jeans that I feel comfortable in and I think look good. This is such an eternal struggle for me!

Also, I will be honest. I have bought underwear (but I don't think this counts for the list). Thats just a necessecity. Also I bought Liberty x Nike dunks. For anyone who has followed this blog for any more than a second, it will be quite clear that the idea of these trainers is about a million times removed from my normal style. I dont know what it is but theres something about them that really appeals to me. Besides, its nice to occaisionally have super comfortable sneakers for those days where you don't want to make too much effort. They are still very cute and pretty so don't judge this indiscretion too harshly! Also I'm not counting them as part of the list because they are replacing my Keds (one in, one out) and are just for when my feet need a rest. Does this count as cheating in your eyes? Given I can't find any of the things on my list, I could probably include the trainers and underwear and still get through the year with under 10!!

I know a couple of my readers mentioned doing a similar exercise. How are you finding it?

There are some items on your wishlist which you crave but you kind of accept that you will never find 'the one'. I have wanted a fitted boucle jacket for quite a while but I find it so hard to find a quality jacket that actually fits me properly. So I had no expectations when I want shopping that I would actually find one! Waiting for me in Libertys was this Isabel Marant Etoile 'Gary' jacket. I promise to take some of my own pictures soon.

The shoulder pads scared me at first, I normally would avoid them like the plague, but actually they are fairly subtle, and just help to give a bit of structure.

I like how this jacket can be so versatile. It will look good with jeans, skirts, trousers, shorts, for summer and for winter. Perfect! Although Isabel Marant is never cheap...it feels liberating to have bought one amazing thing. And although it inspires me to complete my resolution of buying 10 amazing items, this one buy has really satisfied me, and doesn't make me want to go out and buy a load of other things. I think thats the key to every purchase, it should satisfy you.

Its a new year and that means New Years resolutions! One of mine is to be even stricter with what I buy this year. That is why I am trying to limit myself to (roughly) buying only 10 items. Having looked back at what I bought last year, I realised I still managed to waste money on temporary items, when I really could have saved that money and put it towards something I love. Towards the end of the year I certainly got better, and I feel buying just a couple of really great things (like my Isabel Marant boots) has totally revolutionized my look.

Merry Christmas all! I really think I need to make blogging more one of my New Years resolutions....

I have very rarely posted streetstyle shots of myself, I find it so hard to take flattering photos with the self timer, but thanks to iPhones + changing room mirrors, hopefully I can start taking more.

Here is what I basically wear everyday. COS wool peacoat, Topshop jeans, Isabel Marant booties and Vanessa Bruno cabas. The weather has been so awful recently it has been more about survival than style but I love how a great coat can make a look.

Throughout this year I have kept a list of every item of clothing I have bought, and reading it back now is fairly depressing. While I've never been someone to even step foot in Primark, let alone come out with bags full of disposable goods, I am still a bit disappointed! My wardrobe has had so many gaps that I had to buy stop gap pieces, rather than investments. That trend certainly has changed since I got a job, and towards the end of this year I have been able to buy some things that I will love and wear forever. So, I want to continue doing this. I will do a post with a list of the key items I want to buy next year and I'm going to keep the number to around 10 and try very hard to stick to that!

Once again I have been a terrible blogger, so thank you to everyone who visits daily in the hope that I might actually have updated! This will be just a quick one but I promise more interesting posts to come.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that I am obsessed with the Parisian way of dressing. One item above all has become ubiquitous with all things chic and Paris, and that is the Vanessa Bruno sequin cabas. Spotted on the arms of every self-respecting French girl, I can now finally say I have bought my own piece of that cool.

Meet my cabas, bought at the brand new Vanessa Bruno boutique in London. I love it! Although it has no zip which bothers me slightly, it does have a sizable zip pocket - big enough to secure away the essentials. Plus it is great for this time of the year when you need a healthy supply of warm layers at hand at all times.

1. Why did you create the blog?

I suppose I got sick of having random scraps of paper and thousands of inspirational pictures on my computer and having no way of putting my lists and thoughts together. I also wanted to see if there are other people out there who felt the same way about clothes as me.

2. What kind of blogs do you follow?

Terrible I know but I don't want to read pages and pages of text, but I also don't want hundreds of images and no explanation. So really I like blogs that hit that balance. I follow blogs that like what I like - its as simple as that!

I don't really wear it but I love all things Chanel. For cheap but good make-up I like Topshop.

4. Favorite clothing brand?

COS for affordable basics, I aspire to Isabel Marant and I probably would be lost without some Gap in my life. As above, I love Chanel but owning the make-up is a lot easier than owning the clothes.

5. Your indispensable makeup product:

I don't have one :S but I suppose a good range of skincare products is more important than the makeup.

6. Your favorite color:

Black and blue.

7. Your perfume:

Miss Dior Cherie but I am moving on to Diptyque 'L'eau de Tarocco'.

So, I finally succumbed. 'The' Isabel Marant boots I have wanted for so long are finally in my possession. The cost...doesn't bare thinking about but owning perfection has made me want to strive for it in every aspect of my wardrobe. Its the little touches - like the super soft leather lining and sole that elevate these boots above the copy I already owned. I really feel that if I loved every thing I owned as much as these, I would only need a handful of items.

I absolutely love the images from the Isabel Marant lookbook (no surprise there really). I have this unwritten rule that the fewer actual pieces of clothing I wear, the better an outfit looks. By that I don't mean I go out in tiny shorts and tank tops, but that I just cannot make the layering look work for me. It always looks bulky, so I much prefer a few sleek pieces.

I really didn't like these IM heels before but now I'm mad for them. I would love a simple black heel to add an understated sophistication to an outfit. I feel that my wardrobe is starting to head in the right direction now. I managed to get a lovely peacoat from COS and well as some flat ankle boots. Every winter I struggle to find these essential items, yet this year I managed to buy them both in one go. I will post pictures soon. I love how a coat and a boots complete every outfit.

So next I need to find a few more jumpers, a basic black dress, a mini skirt and jeans - why is it impossible to find skinny jeans in a mid blue wash!? I think the IM booties might be my next purchase though. As with the other things I've bought recently they have been on my list for so long, I should just get them. I know I won't regret it. Watch this space!

Its been one of those times where you just cannot find anything you want to buy. So instead of searching for something 'new', I'm buying the things that I have wanted for ages but not been able to afford or make a decision about! Firstly I have wanted Repettos for so long. They symbolize the perfect classic French ballet flats. To make things a little interesting I went for metallic - still very wearable, but a slight change from my usual black. They are not exactly sturdy, but they are incredibly comfortable.

And I have never had proper luggage, so I went for classic Lonchamp. Its not very big so it certainly forces me to pack light. It can be fitted on top of their wheely suitcases, so that is on the list for the future.

So what is next? It may well be the Isabel Marant boots I have drooled over for so long. I have finally found somewhere in London to get them.

Sorry I have once again been an awful blogger! I'll start by thanking the people who have been kind enough to follow my blog and actually get something out of it. I never imagined anyone would read it or that there were as many people out there who feel the same way as I do about fashion.

Moving on, I've done a couple of other style icon posts but nothing in a long time. I have been going through a long drought when it comes to inspiration, but this fashion week Geraldine Saglio has come to my rescue. I have long followed her style and admired it but she has really been hitting the right notes this season. She seems to get a lot of criticism from people saying that she is a clone of Emmanuelle, and that she isn't wearing 'cutting edge' things. But frankly, of course she has been inspired by Emmanuelle, but she has made the style her own, and who needs to wear weird and 'wonderful' things to be interesting?

I feel that she incapsulates everything I aim for in a minimal style. Well fitted tee-shirts, flattering skinny jeans, simple but elegant accessories and low maintenance make-up and hair.

The most random of posts, I apologize. I have been so busy lately and today was the first time I have done anything at the weekend. I decided to check out Aime in Notting Hill - the premiere destination for French labels. There was so much nice Isabel Marant and APC stuff, but nothing I HAD to have. This was pretty much the story everywhere I went so I consoled myself with all things sugary. Whoever says London doesn't know good food.....

First was a cookie.

Then a Selfridges food hall crepe. Yeah....they don't exactly skimp on the Nutella!

And finally, another picture of pretty coloured buildings.

I am at an annoying point clothes wise - I really need some new things, I have money to buy clothes, but I can't find anything in stores! There are a few things I have seen online - ideally I'd like to try before I buy but needs must!

I did manage to get a chic Longchamp travel bag - very cute and useful, I will take some pictures soon.

As I am so uninspired and have been such a bad blogger, I'm letting anyone still reading my blog decide what I blog about next. Lets hear it!

So I created the list but it I always find it useful to have a picture of everything I'm looking for. Seriously, what did we do before net-a-porter? The new APC arrivals are absolutely perfect. I would love one of these merino sweaters, the only problem is that they are dry clean only because they have suede elbow patches. I want to limit myself to buying 5 key items for winter and I think these will be:

sweater
mid blue skinny jeans
coat (maybe this APC duffel coat) or a Barbour Bedale - I know these can look either hipstery or too countrified for the city but I have seen it worn very chicly, plus it would be very useful for rainy London
ankle boots
Black Joseph skirt

There is room for manoevure with these but I think that should be enough to see me through the winter. Now I just need to find everything....

In other exciting news I finally bought my first lipstick (I know, I know!) I got Chanel Rouge Coco 'Paris' so pretty and deep berry colour. I think it will be good for both day and night.

I have never been much of a make-up wearer. I love it, but it never seems to work for me. That is until I discovered the Chanel blush 'Fresque'. Honestly, it is the best, most natural looking blush ever. It gives you a slight glow without being overpowering or unnatural.

This is a screencap I took from a DVD that came with Vogue Paris a while back. It is taken from a scene where Peter Philips is teaching the other make-up artists the look for a Chanel Couture show, and he uses Fresque.

I have just come back from a few days in Paris, unfortunately I couldn't enjoy it as I normally do but I still managed to get a few photos and some style inspiration. From people watching I have come to a few conclusions about what is chic in Paris at the moment. Firstly, I saw many people wearing their hair in a beautiful chignon, Im going to get to work on perfecting this! Everyone was wearing chic blazers and I have also decided I need a Balenciaga city bag in my life. I saw the Vanessa Bruno bag and I wasn't madly in love so I will give it a miss and save up instead. Minimal

I know that right now minimalism is the 'hot topic', but you will have to believe when I say that it is something I have been interested in long before it appeared in the September issue of every magazine. I am naturally drawn to uncomplicated clothes, and I lack the ability to layer in an appealing way. I think it is important to make distinctions when it comes to minimalism in fashion. It can either mean:

- A minimal wardrobe, i.e. owning a very small number of pieces.

- Minimal clothes i.e. each piece is classic/simple/maybe even stark.

Personally I want to combine these ideas. However it was pointed out in a discussion on tfs that it is very hard to achieve minimalism if you own poor quality pieces. I certainly agree with this (to an extent). I think the look is better with well fitted, tailored pieces as perfected by Jil Sander, than with h&m, but I believe it is possible to achieve a balance. The key items like blazers, bags and shoes should be the best quality possible as these are the pieces with the most impact.

When I saw these two images they immediately stuck in my head as perfect illustrations of the philosophy - simple, but in no way boring. Diane has added interest with shoes, whilst Barbara has used texture. Of course the dress is effectively the same shape etc, but they manage to look different.

So, what I want to achieve is a wardrobe with as few pieces as possible. Each piece should be loved and used equally, and it should be possible to match everything. I want to start with a Crombie coat (black), a long sleeve black tee dress, white t-shirts, a blazer and a black mini skirt. Has anyone else seen the Joseph FW collection and wished they owned the whole lot? I think a few pieces from there will help me on my way to minimalism.

I'll talk more about the minimal wardrobe in my next piece. I've made a list of all the things my wardrobe should have, and I'm going to try to only buy things on this list.

I always enjoy seeing the contents of other peoples bags so I thought I would show you all what is in mine. My bag is a Marc by Marc Jacobs baby Groovee.

Ok, on the top row we have a rather old London A-Z, a blue and white polka dot pouch that holds my phone and travelcards etc. On top of that is an ancient oat bar thing and tic tacs. Biro and then the flowery pouch has things like hand cream, tissues etc.

Bottom row is my Moleskine planner (love), Vanessa Bruno wallet and i-pod.

Nothing too exciting I'm afraid!

I really feel the need to upgrade my bag...I just don't feel that its really 'me'. To get a good deal on it I had to get it without seeing it, which is rarely a good idea. Its useful and I love having a long strap, but its quite small and when using the long strap the ends of the bag kind of curl up. I saw on the Vanessa Bruno site that a store is opening in London in September (so exciting!) so I think I want to get this bag (Lune), it's bigger and should hold it's shape better. There is also a version with a long strap. I think I want it in a stone colour which is a nice neutral. I was also sort of thinking a PS1....but - expensive! Feel free to give your opinions/suggestions :)

I went to the Grace Kelly exhibition at the V&A the other day. There were some beautiful dresses, and a stunning brown Hermes Kelly from the 70s, but really there wasn't too much to see. So unless you are a huge Grace fan, I would save your money and see the permanent fashion exhibition for free. This includes iconic looks throughout history, unfortunately for the 2000s it is a Juicy Couture velour tracksuit. How did we go from a classic Chanel suit to that!

One thing from the exhibit that did stick in my mind was a quote from WWD, which said that Grace was known for her 'conspicuous good taste'. I really like this phrase and it is something I aspire to. As much as I love designer clothes, I never want to advertise this fact by what I'm wearing. I think you can wear Chanel, Fendi, Prada etc (not that I own any!), but in an understated way. I want to look luxe but you don't need huge logos to achieve that.

NB: I'm wondering if there is anything you would like to see more of on this blog. Maybe more streetstyle shots (even if just taken with my macbook), more polyvore, or something? Thanks!

I'm another year older, but now I can finally say I own a 'forever' piece. As it was an important birthday I was fortunate enough to be given these (scroll down!):

I love them, they are so classic and they have been on my wish list for a loooong time. I can honestly see myself loving them as much in 40 years time, as I do now. Good shoes are the cornerstone of a good outfit (I think) so I feel ready to build on the rest of my wardrobe with things I will enjoy wearing forever.

I was having a root around my back copies of Vogue and rediscovered this editorial from the November 09 issue of Vogue Espana. Its the only Spanish issue I own, and while the eds can be hit and miss, there is a luxe and simple aesthetic running through them which appeals to me.

I was having a discussion the other day with my friend (and future blogger!) about resolving to be better groomed. This is something I have always meant to get round to doing on a permanent basis but have never actually succeeded.

For me, good grooming is about the following things. Firstly, hair. I am sooo insanely lazy when it comes to my hair. I am lucky enough to have pretty low maintenance straight hair, which I usually allow to dry naturally and then brush a bit. I find it looks so much better if I brush it when its wet so it doesn't dry with knots, and also taking the time to blow dry really makes it look nicer for longer. So if I'm leaving the house from now on I will always blow dry my hair.

I am not really keen on wearing make-up but I would like to wear lipstick every now and then. Skin is so important to having a groomed appearance. I have been using a cleanser everyday for quite a while now, which is a start. Yesterday I bought a facial moisturiser (from the same Latvian brand 'Madara' as my cleanser) so I'm hoping by adding another step to my skincare routine, my skin will keep getting better.

I do enjoy painting my nails. Chanel's ' Particuliere' is my favourite classic colour, as well as Barry M's 'Raspberry' . I will try to either have bare nails or painted ones - no leaving the polish on until it is horribly chipped!

I don't think good grooming is just about hair and makeup, clothes are essential in portraying a certain image. You can have beautiful sleek hair and perfect makeup, but if you're wearing a hessian sack, then you will still look like a mess. This image from Jalouse really sums up the look I want to go for. Simple neutral lips and an even skin tone, and the hair is that perfect blend of natural but with a bit of effort. I've never had long hair, and at the moment it is about as long as it has ever been....I wanted to see how it would look long but in reality it probably does look better above the shoulders, so I definitely need to book a hair cut. Clotheswise - they should fit you well and be clean!

The person who exemplifies good grooming for me is Olivia Palermo. I love how she sticks to a few key hair and makeup looks, but pulls each off perfectly. I don't think I'd ever want to spend hours on achieving absolute perfection every morning, but to make a definite effort is something to aspire to.

Ok I've gone on a bit! So tell me, what is good grooming to you? How much of an effort do you make everyday, and is it worth it?

I went to see Heartbreaker today and I haven't enjoyed a film so much in a long time. It follows a fairly typical rom-com pattern, but still had a substance to it that made it stand out. Romain Duris played his role perfectly and I was incredibly jealous of Vanessa's hair, Chanel wardrobe, and Hermes Kelly.

Since reading deadfleurette's F/W planning post, I've begun to turn my attention to making my own list. The weather seems to have turned, going from hot to cold and then back again. When it's winter I dream of summer dressing, but as soon as it's summer I'm desperate for winter again. I certainly prefer the layers and scope of winter. I have also been inspired for a long time by the concept of a 4-5 piece wardrobe, as discussed at length on thefashionspot. Having hundreds of clothes has never really appealed to me, and I've never been drawn to fast fashion. But with constant wardrobe culls (it's a guilty pleasure of mine) I really own very little! So I guess this post is a chance to work through the gaps, and work out a small, but effective list of the things I could buy that would have the most impact. Firstly I'll list what I already own that I am happy with.

- Brown leather skirt

- Powder blue Ralph Lauren shirt

- Assorted long and short sleeve t-shirts

- Cashmere jumpers

- Black ballet flats

- Brown suede ankle boots

Of course I have more but really there is far too little. I am particularly lacking in the trousers. I despise jean shopping, and the pair I've had for the last 5 years have finally given up the ghost. The shops are saturated with things that weren't even nice enough to shift at bargain sale prices, so are hardly the most inspiring places right now. The thing that will totally revolutionize my wardrobe is getting a job (which will hopefully happen sooner or later). I've never had much money to have the clothes I dream of. But money wouldn't lead to frivolity, it would actually increase the planning staging of buying even further - the price of anything has to be justified.

So, what do I want to buy? The latest Isabel Marant show did not grab me at first, but the idea of the cropped and rolled trousers has really grown on me, but the jeans have to work when unrolled as well so that it isn't just a one note look. I usually head to Gap for jeans that last well for the price but there is nothing but dark washes at the moment. Ideally I want black and a lighter side of medium wash. I am wondering if an investment in J Brand is worth the money. I saw a tv show where they went behind the scenes at the J Brand factory, and I was really impressed with the amount of effort that goes into getting every aspect of colour, fit and the perfect amount of bought 'distress'. As I'm short I think a cropped version would hit me on the ankle which is the most flattering length on any height.

Secondly, I am so in love with my Isabel Marant style ankle boots so I really want tons of them! Beige, black, leather, suede. All assortments of ankle boots really, chelsea boots perhaps - a more fitted type that don't just have to be worn over the top of trousers.

I feel that the search for the perfect t-shirt is an ongoing one, but shirts are a lot easier. I really love these American Vintage ones (in white). International online store please open soon!

The most crucial item is a new coat. The last few years I have survived the British winters with nothing but a short wool jacket. I don't think I want to do that again so I will be on the hunt for a coat that falls slightly above the knee. Ideally camel, but I'll settle for black.

I'm really being drawn back to the Isabel Marant look, but with my own take on it. As much as I am really not a fan of Kate Bosworth, I absolutely adore this outfit. I love the skirt.....Not great for winter, but never mind!

We are bombarded with thousands of images every day and my computer is full of 'inspiration' pictures. So it is nice to be able to find an image that sums up how you feel, how you want to look, and all in just one picture.

I'm feeling drawn to the simplicity I think this picture exemplifies. A pair of jeans, a cashmere jumper, a great jacket and perfect hair. Why make it any more complicated than that?

I can now tick another thing off my new year's resolutions list - see Air perform live. It was so insanely hot but the performance was very impressive. They didn't play my absolute favourite songs, but I gained some new ones. I was curious to see how the act would work on stage, and luckily it did. Jean-Benoît was often playing two keyboards at once and singing - no mean feat. Unfortunately I didn't dare take my good camera so these shots aren't the best. The first is of the venue (you can't really see anything, I know, but it was very beautiful). One thing I particularly enjoyed was the screen that played beautiful displays throughout.

And here is just a couple of the many videos I took. The first is 'People In The City' which was one I had never heard before but now I am obsessed with it! The second is 'Kelly Watch The Stars'.

I've had a black leather skirt on my wish list for a long time, finally I find a perfect one but....it's brown! I hardly ever deviate from black, white and grey, so brown is a bit unusual for me. Luckily, with all my other clothes being monochrome, everything works with this skirt. I'm going to wear it with white or powder blue shirts mostly. Because it is lined it should be okay to wear in the summer, and it will look good with tights in winter. I'm struggling a bit with shoes though, any ideas?

I have been given an award by the enviably stylish Journal d'une Afropeenne, and I have to list 7 things about myself and pass it on.

1. I can't ride a bike.

2. I will probably have as many cats as the crazy cat lady from the Simpsons when Im older.

3. Im currently playing a computer game that's older that I am. Check out these high tech graphics! It is Police Quest 1.

4. I can't get through a day without a chocolate soya drink.

This is a little off topic but hopefully there are some other tennis fans reading this. I am obsessed with tennis, and my favourite time of year is the two weeks in which Wimbledon falls. I have been lucky enough to go to the tournament for the last couple of years, and here is a photo summary of my day yesterday.

It began with an early start and a long walk to go and sit in a queue for 4 hours. Despite arriving so early there were still 6900+ people in front of us. It was also one of the hottest days, so it was a real test of stamina and commitment!

This picture doesn't do any justice to how long the queue was!

But it was all worth it once we got to the Aorangi practice courts and spotted my idol Rafael Nadal practicing! I absolutely adore him, not only is he insanely talented but he is also very nice and humble.

And I even got my ticket signed by him!

The queues for all the courts were so long and the heat was pretty unbearable so we only really watched a bit of a doubles match between Tommy Robredo and Marcel Granollers (ESP) v Ram and Knowle. I don't think I had seen a doubles match live before, so it was nice to finally watch one.

Laduree may do some of the best macarons but their tarts should not be forgotten, they are absolutely amazing. I had this Tarte Passion Framboises, and it is the most delicious thing ever. The tarte citron is also perfection (honestly, I did only have one!) I really wish you could buy the plates. Oh also - Laduree french fries are definitely worth trying, surprisingly good!

One of the FW 10 shows that stood out for me was Marc Jacobs. Usually I tend to prefer the M by MJ shows, and find the mainline slightly unwearable. However this collection is the definition of 'wearable'. I have always been a mini skirt person but these looks are opening my mind to a world of longer skirt possibilities. I particuarly love the outfit with the sequin cardigan, it has an air of understated elegance and proves that being covered up doesn't automatically mean you can't look eye catching.

Side note - I'm just playing with the layout, so it's a work in progress. I think it looks a bit neater :) Let me know what you think.

I'm starting to feel a little more inspired for summer now, and I'm finding these screencaps of Jane Birkin from the movie 'La Piscine' are capturing my mood perfectly. So here is the continuation of the list I started in the last post.

4) I try to only wear natural fabrics, and try to buy the best quality I can afford. All the high street shops now do cashmere, or blends, so a little bit of luxury doesn't need to cost a fortune.

5) I love shoes but weirdly have very few...I do have a couple of other shoes but these are my absolute favourites! I wear them to death.

6) I seem to only buy tees that are exactly the same - short sleeve with a scoop neck. The white one is from COS and the black is from James Perse.

7) Black tights make an outfit. Im loving my Wolfords so will definitely buy more next winter.

8) I have a....limited palette.

9) For someone who wears no make-up, I have rather a lot. I just had to put in a pic of my super cute case which is from Paul & Joe.

10) And finally, what else!

So you can probably tell I have a very basic/classic wardrobe. Boring to some, but obviously I like it, but it is still very much a work in progress.

A while back on Garance Dore's blog there was a post entitled '10 things about your style'. I really enjoyed reading her and her reader's lists, sooo I have started my own, and I will add more in the future.

1. Stripes are a staple. I couldn't live without them - summer/winter, it doesn't matter! This is just a sample of my collection, but I think the search for the perfect stripy will last a lifetime. Here from left to right there is Monoprix, Monoprix, COS and Petit Bateau.

2. The only trends I follow are the ones Peter Philips tells me to! (from l-r: Nouvelle Vague, Ming, Particuliere and Black Satin)

3. I'm a one bag girl. I can use the same bag everyday for years. At the moment it is a Marc by Marc Jacobs Baby Groovee. I find the long strap so practical, I hate having to keep pushing short handles back on my shoulder.

Some not very good pictures of the American Vintage dress which arrived today. It's going to be a perfect light dress for summer, and I'm hoping I can layer it with fitted jackets or cardigans and tights in the winter. Im taking my 'little black dress in summer' inspiration from Sofia Coppola, who pulls the look off perfectly. I promise modelling shots soon!

The waistband is a nice touch, its not too tight and gives the dress just the right amount of shape.

In a sea of models, Karmen Pedaru's style is a winner. Although models do tend to wear similar things - black and lots of leather, Karmen manages to stand out from the crowd with her 'basic' but interesting ensembles. Models' fashion week styles show that you don't need a huge number of clothes to make exciting outfits.

To replicate Karmen's style you need Frye engineer boots, fur jackets, leather leggings or skinny jeans, and a killer small handbag....and maybe her legs! Using black and white as a base palette means Karmen can mix and match pieces and create different looks from the same items, and she makes a statement by using texture, rather than colour.

With the weather almost on the up, I am trying to work on a list of things to buy for summer. One thing that is high up is shorts, and I am drawn to this APC madras pair. However I am someone whose wardrobe consists of black....white, and just a little bit of grey and navy. I shy away from patterns (other than stripes of course) because I am still building up a wardrobe of quality basics, and to me it is easier to stick to solid neutrals that will work with every other piece I own. I know these check shorts are just stripes going in two directions, but I am wondering if they are too limited in what they can be worn with, or not. Of course I wouldn't rush out to buy trousers in this pattern, but maybe for summer - where there is more freedom to wear colourful and interesting pieces, it could work.

So I want to know - how do you go about introducing patterns/prints to your wardrobe? Is it a case of just jumping in head first, or are some patterns safer than others? And should you have some clothes in your wardrobe that can only be worn a certain way?

Maybe most importantly, should these shorts have a place in my wardrobe?

I have always believed in the principle of buying the best you can afford, and sticking to classic pieces, but only now do I feel I have reached an age where I know what suits me, and what I like to wear. Deciding on investment shoes and bags is easy, but clothes always seems a bit trickier to me. Accessories can easily lift an entire outfit, and bags in particular age well and can take a lot of use. Whereas clothes can shrink in the wash or get tears, so where is it safest to invest your money? I've composed a small list of examples of items I think might be worth spending a little extra on.

Firstly, going back to a previous post about blouses - I really like the look of this James Perse one, I will have to see how much it is in the UK, in America it is so much cheaper. Although white can quite easily become grey, given shirts are usually made of tougher fabric then tees for example, hopefully I could get a lot of wear out of a piece like this.

The stores I go to seem not to have picked up on the a-line skirt trend, so I am drawn back to the reliable 'body-con' skirt. This James Perse version is fairly classic but has an interesting twist with the slight draping. However it is almost certainly not worth £130, so I am considering the basic skirts on offer at Wolford. I am in love with my new tights, so hopefully the skirts are as soft and flattering.

Now, this dress is a definite for me. It is from American Vintage - a French brand who do beautifully soft jersey basics. This dress would take me through summer and would also be suitable for layering in winter.

Finally - ballet flats! I have had a black pair of French Soles for 2 years now, although they probably need resoling on the heel (and cleaning!) they are in very good condition, so I would not hesitate to buy another pair. Silver would work well for summer and also I'm hoping it might look alright with black tights too. Opinions?

One thing I forgot to mention is jackets/coats. Living in such a cold climate they become invaluable, and 5 months+ out of the year they are all anyone sees, so it is another item worth investing in, in my opinion.

I feel I have to spread the word about a brilliant skincare line called 'Madara' which originates from Latvia. For reasons best kept to myself, I am somewhat obsessed by the country, and so when I read about the brand in the Wallpaper guide for Riga, I had to try it out. I have life long skin problems so it is very difficult for me to buy any skincare that doesn't irritate or sting, so I try to always use products that are as natural as possible. Madara fits the bill completely!

A little summary from the website HERE

This description really appeals to me. I find it hard

to understand why people are willing to pay a lot of money for products that contain chemicals, so organic and natural is the way I go. So far I only have the foaming cleanser. It is suitable for all skin types and smells lovely and fresh. I have tried samples of the deep moisture cream and the tinted moistuizer and I love both, but I will definitely get the moisturizer.

I don't wear any makeup so I think it is important to make the most of my skin, and Madara certainly helps.

I just love cherry blossom, they have the power to make even the ugliest street into something beautiful. I like this extract from the site I got the photos from:

You would have thought that something as simple as a white blouse would be easy to find, but for some reason, it's impossible. This 'the Row' shirt posted on Jak & Jil is as close to perfection as a white blouse can get to.

But I was pleased to see this Zara version in their May lookbook. Wonder what the odds are of actually finding one are!

So my question is, am I the only person who finds the basics hardest to actually find? It seems like many brands feel the need to add some extra detail, when all I want is a plain white shirt. Or maybe I am just too fussy!

I had a very welcome break from studying yesterday and needed to be in London early so I decided to spend the afternoon doing what I love, shopping and eating! First stop was Covent Garden which has the best COS. It's huge so you get a good selection, and the top floor has mostly mens and some women's party clothes, with sofas so it almost feels like shopping at home. There were loads of great pieces, I came in looking for a skirt...and came out with a long sleeve tee. Typical! It's really nice though, and as much as I need trousers/skirts, I also need tees. Somehow I only have 3 and one has loads of wholes in and the other 2 have shrunk. I really like how this one is really long in the body, is made of light material, and there is no hem on the body - it makes it quite Rick Owens-esque.

And I finally got some Wolford tights! I know warm weather is upon us, but again - my tights all have wholes and I've been promising to buy these for so long. They get such rave reviews so I hope they are worth the money.

Finally I had a lunch stop at Ed's Easy Diner in Soho. I had a chocolate milkshake, chicken and fries. The fries have changed and were a little disappointing but the rest was delicious. The prices are good and the service is also very fast.

I am only just realising how amazing this silhouette is, and how I think it would work for me. A fitted top (certainly not as tight as the one in the first image) and an a-line skirt - so simple. The skirt hitting mid waist would totally eliminate any evidence of my problem areas. Why didn't I come to this realization a long time ago!? Now...I just need to find one...easier said than done.

Changing Styles

I am going through a period of not having any clue what direction my style is going in, which is incredibly frustrating! Recently I have been trying to go for a more relaxed and casual look by wearing looser, rolled cuff chinos etc as opposed to skinny jeans, but I'm beginning to think that maybe it just doesn't work for me. The kind of outfits I always feel comfortable and think I look good in are when I'm wearing black tights, a mini skirt, either a tee or a shirt and a coat. I guess it is pretty obvious that I should stick to this look if I feel my best in it, and maybe I should go back to that. I've been trying to gather some images that inspire me, and I think these fit the bill:

Firstly I can't say I would mind have such beautiful hair. No matter what Im wearing, if I think my hair looks horrible, I won't feel good.

For tops I think I want either slightly loose linen tees or blue or white shirts, preferably Ralph Lauren.

My biggest fashion dilemma is trousers! Do you think it is possible to have a wardrobe that doesn't have jeans in? You can easily get away with wearing the same jeans everyday, but do people notice more if you wear the same skirt repeatedly? I love the look of these black pants but I'm certain my legs wouldn't look this good, and I always worry about becoming too attached to black trouser when they are going to end up all faded eventually. So, really I need a nice black mini skirt and a couple of pairs of Wolford tights. I've been saying I need them for ages but I need to finally get round to buying them!

I already have one pair of French Sole (black leather with patent toe) and they surprisingly have worn quite well, so I wouldn't hesitate to buy another pair. I love the look of metallic shoes, silver and gold can be just as much of a staple/basic as black.

Besides flats, I of course need to stick to boots, they instantly make me feel good.

Basically I think the most appropriate style - the one thats most 'me' is one that is more on the prim and proper side. Slightly fitted shirts, skinny trousers or shorter skirts, neat ballet flats or ankle boots, and very importantly - a beautiful coat/blazer or jacket.

So - how did you decide on the style that suits you best? Do you think you should just stick to one kind of a look, or is it ok to experiment?

I have had such a great time today out in London, and enjoyed the most beautiful day of the year so far. The day started with a trip to Aubaine which is a French restaurant in South Kensington. I've been twice before and everytime it has been amazing! We had a great spot to people watch, there were so many well dressed people walking around, way too many nice handbags, which made me incredibly jealous!

The restaurant is decorated beautifully, very typically French.

I went for the onion soup, which is the first time I've ever had it. It tasted very nice but I couldn't finish it. The promise of a pastry made me restrain myself!

After being presented with a slate block full of mouth watering pastries, I decided on an eclair for the second time in a row. It is absolutely the best eclair I've ever had, so full of a chocolate custard on the inside.

Afterwards there was a trip to the Conran Shop and King's Road to enjoy the sun.

I had to take a picture of these houses, the colours are so pretty.

This trip reinforced one thing for me - I have to have a Celine bag! I saw them in person for the first time and the totes are so wonderfully classic.

I have such an obsession with macarons, so much so that I have started to collect Laduree boxes. Its a pretty expensive (although delicious) habit, but these boxes are so beautiful that they can double up as decorative pieces.

The plates and cups used in the restaurant are adorable, I wish you could buy them. This picture was taken in the rue Bonaparte Laduree in Paris. I highly recommend the eclairs, I also have had a little creme patisserie tart with raspberries on top - to die for.

I just bought this parka jacket from Gap, I haven't bought anything from there in ages, but finally they are getting some good things in. It really wasn't on the list of things I intended to buy today, given the fact that my jeans have massive holes in them...but it will be pretty versatile - good for Spring and I can layer it in Winter.

Here I am wearing it with the COS tee I got the other day, and some Uniqlo trousers.

These two looks are so effective, and despite using such similar items, these two people manage to look totally different. The idea of a uniformed way of dressing really appeals to me. Not only does it eradicate the stress of getting dressed in the morning, but it also it allows a look to become identifiably 'yours'. A uniform should be specific to you and not make you a clone. Of course it could easily become boring, but there are ways around this. I know I seem to go on about this, but the key is quality! If you wear cheap jeans and jackets then you can tire of them easily, they become disposable and replaceable. But if you invest in quality pieces then you will have given more thought and effort to their selection and are likely to want to keep them. Also you have to be passionate about the clothes - why would you wear something regularly if you didn't like it or it didn't fit correctly?

I think I'm still working on a 'uniform'. I do gravitate towards the same things though. I tend to wear a stripey top, mini skirt+tights or jeans everyday! Luckily, I love them! Although I believe in investing in quality pieces, it's better to spend your money on good shoes and accessories, these make the biggest impact on an outfit. With clothes, there is no need to spend hundreds of pounds on a t-shirt - unless you want to - just buy whatever suits you best.

I have wanted leather leggings for so long, every polyvore outfit I create uses them so I'm certain I would get a lot of wear out of them. In the past they may have had bad connotations but now I see them as more of a basic piece, an interesting twist on black skinny jeans, achieved purely by using a new material. They need serious shortening, aren't all that cheap and we are heading into summer, but my question is - are they worth the splurge?! Opinions please! (ignore the security tag in the top!)

My latest obsession is the ankle boot. I admit I'm a little late to the party but I have really just been holding out for the right pair. I have loved the Isabel Marant version for a long time, it always seemed to me to be perfectly wearable and versatile. Up until I bought my first pair I had always worn flats, which I still love, but the ankle boot is certainly my go-to shoe at the moment.

And these are the pair I bought in Paris at the beginning of the year. They are from Les Petites Parisiennes. Paris, unlike London, has hundreds of different shoe shops with plenty of choice at every price point. Luckily for me, the Parisian girl has taken these types of shoes to heart and they were readily available. I had to go to many a shoe shop to find the right pair but I eventually settled on these. They are very comfortable, and have enough heel to look good but not so much that walking becomes difficult (if I can manage, anyone can!) They make any outfit look pulled together and more dressed up.

I think that they are sufficiently different from the typical black wool coat to make them interesting, without being a colour that is incredibly difficult to work with. A winter coat has to be versatile otherwise it's not worth buying. I will definitely be on the look out for one. They look great against all black outfits, and would work with jeans, and any colours you would normally wear with a trench coat.

Fur vests also seem to be making the rounds, in particular this Isabel Marant version. I can't say I was attracted to the unusual pattern when I first saw it on the runway, but it has certainly grown on me. To me it work best over a leather jacket, but personally I will stick to a solid colour vest!

In January I went to Paris, and one of the things I bought was this Vanessa Bruno wallet. I had been looking for a wallet for ages, but couldn't make my mind up if it was worth saving up for a Louis Vuitton one or not, as there seemed to be no good mid priced wallets anywhere. But luckily I spotted this one and it was a very reasonable price in my opinion. The leather is very soft and pebbled and a lovely shade of mousey brown. Although it picks up marks I'm hoping it will look even better with use.

Although I adore my Miss Dior Cherie, these new Marc Jacobs Splash fragrances are high on my wish list. They are now available at Harrods. £45 for 300ml which seems like a good deal to me. These fragrances are inspired by macarons so I'm sure they will be perfect sweet scents for the summer months.

Pomegranate: this is an invigorating blend of mandarin flowers, bergamot, lemon chiffon, rhubarb and violet with uplifting pomegranate. The dry down is a sugared musk with a blend of vanilla, and amber.

Biscotti: the citrus floral treat opens with the freesia, bergamot and orange flower, whilst the heart of pistachio blossom shares a sweet richness. Creamy and soft vanilla add a smooth balance to the scent.

Apple: the tart yet refreshing fragrance opens with juicy apple, lemon and grapefruit. Subtle hints of rosemary, jasmine and soft stellata magnolia pervade, whilst allowing warm driftwood, coriander and cardamom to add a gentle delight.

Anyone had a chance to try these? Do they smell as good as they sound?

Apart from the Chanel 2.55, the Sofia Coppola designed bag for Louis Vuitton is my ultimate bag. So classic and understated, yet practical. Pity about the price tag. I have a Marc by Marc Jacobs baby Groovee bag which has proven to me that bags with short and long straps are the way to go.

One of my favourite bands is Phoenix. They are French and produce perfect indie/alternative/pop music. They also happen to have great style, very typically French - lots of APC shirts, peacoats and well worn boots. I recommend you give their music a listen, I think it has a broad appeal.
